The carnival has been held over a long period (over 40 years). It grew from a couple of community football teams competing every year. It is said that Koonibba and Point Pearce were the teams who initiated this carnival concept in 1971. The whole idea of the carnival was to have a competition played in good spirit and most importantly, a place where Aboriginal people could get together on a social occasion and enjoy themselves in a peaceful environment. We trust that this concept still continues and will continue to expand into the Sports Carnival.
The Port Augusta Aboriginal Sporting Committee is proud to support the tradition of the State Aboriginal Football and Netball carnival. The committee was established to organise sporting events including the State Aboriginal Football and Netball carnival in the planning and coordinating the running of the weekend.
